8 Cool and Fun Companies that Are Giving Back

3 November 2014

As the trend toward social enterprise grows, there are now enough one-for-one and B Corporations out there that you can do a significant amount of your shopping with organizations that are committed to social betterment.

It’s a great idea to use business as a lever for change, but it can be tricky to find companies that have the products and services you’re looking for, and that are also dedicated to giving back. So in the interest of giving publicity where it’s due, here are a few businesses that have interesting and fun things to offer. The best part is, they in turn will use your money to help improve the world we live in.

1. Cissé Trading Company

Admit it – you love chocolate, you really love hot chocolate, and you really really love baked chocolate goods. Cissé Trading Company provides luxury fair trade chocolate products, including baking mixes and hot chocolate, and in turn Cissé helps take care of the farmers who manufacture the beans. You can even write to the cocoa farmers via a QR code on the back of every product.

2. Soko

If you want jewelry that isn’t the same old designs that everyone has, one way to do that is to look at independent jewelry artists. However, many of the most talented artists live in the developing world, with no access to the kinds of technologies it would take to get their jewelry to your doorstep.

This is where Soko comes in. It’s an online store that connects you directly to exports in the developing world

This is where Soko comes in. It’s an online store that connects you directly to exports in the developing world who make beautiful handcrafted jewelry. By buying in this way, you can help break the cycle of poverty for skilled artisans who simply wouldn’t have access to customers otherwise.

3. Kno Clothing

Philadelphia-based Kno Clothing is doing its part to end homelessness with a one-for-one model that provides housing and clothing for people in need. Kno and their partners have housed over 39,000 people so far, and have hand-delivered more than 3,000 articles of clothing.

Kno works with charities like Bethesda Mission to create housing, and every purchase you make gets them one step closer to their goal of making homelessness a thing of the past.

4. YumButter

If you’ve ever had homemade nut butter, you know how much better it is than the over-processed supermarket stuff. YumButter knows this, too, and so they set out to create a line of delicious, organic nut butters that are healthy and good for you.

That’s not where it ends, though – YumButter operates on a “buy-one:feed-one” policy, and so far they have fed over 45,000 children with malnutrition. In addition, they work closely with a nonprofit in Guatemala to bring prenatal supplements to pregnant mothers, as well as educating them on nutrition and food sanitation for their children.

5. Back to the Roots

This company has such a great backstory. The two founders were months away from college graduation, when they learned that gourmet mushrooms could be grown on used coffee grounds. One test bucket of mushrooms later, they abandoned their previous career paths and went full-time into urban mushroom farming.

You can buy Back to the Roots mushroom kits online or at select retailers, and by doing so you not only make your own eco-friendly food supply at home, but you help reuse and recycle urban waste in the process. Win-win!

6. Speak Shop

If you’ve ever wanted to get serious about learning Spanish, Speak Shop offers an enjoyable and effective way to do that while helping out teachers who are struggling in poverty-stricken areas of Guatemala.

For a very reasonable price (usually about $10 an hour), you can have a private tutoring session via Skype with an experienced teacher, and have fun while learning another language and helping someone who just wants to share her knowledge with others and get paid a fair wage for it.

7. United By Blue

With an indirect one-for-one model, they remove one pound of trash from the water for every product sold

Trash in the world’s oceans and waterways is a huge issue that affects the global water supply, and clothing company United By Blue aims to do something about it. With an indirect one-for-one model, they remove one pound of trash from the water for every product sold. To date, more than 4,000 volunteers have removed over 200,000 pounds of trash in 116 cleanup missions.

Not only is that a great way to help save the planet, but United By Blue’s clothes are pretty cool, too. They’re practical wardrobe items for casual, somewhat outdoorsy people, without sacrificing style along the way.

8. Greyston Foundation

The Greyston Foundation started out as a bakery in Yonkers, New York, in the early 1980s. The founders wanted to provide employment opportunities for people in their area who could not otherwise find work. As the bakery became more and more popular, Greyston expanded their mission, and have now achieved certified B Corp status.

The Greyston Foundation is now an integrated network of programs, helping low-income communities by providing housing, childcare, jobs, and other necessities for people in need.

Their belief in the power of open hiring has shown just how far people can go when they’re given an opportunities to reach their potential.

Honorable Mention: Ello

You’ve probably already heard of this new social network, hyped by some as being an open and ad-free alternative to Facebook. After some skepticism and speculation as to how they would generate revenue without ads, Ello decided to silence the critics by converting to a public benefit corporation.

It remains to be seen how Ello turns their new certification into a business model

It remains to be seen how Ello turns their new certification into a business model, but they’ve started by getting investors who are on board with their vision. Unlike regular corporations, PBCs are allowed to make business decisions that don’t benefit the bottom line, and they’re legally required to do social good.

So although we don’t know exactly what Ello’s next move is, watch this space, because something both fun and charitable is likely to happen very soon!
